So Breckinridge, former Vice President of the United States, rode over to Johnston in a huff, “General Johnston, I cannot get my men to make the charge.” Johnston replied calmly, "Then I will help you.”

Riding along Bowen’s line, the commander clinked the soldiers’ bayonets with the tin cup he had taken in the 18th Wisconsin’s camp as his share of the “spoils”. “Men of Missouri and Arkansas,” he boomed, “the enemy is stubborn. I want you to show General Beauregard and General Bragg what you can do with your bayonets and toothpicks [Bowie Knives].” Then, galloping over to Statham’s brigade, he made a similar speech: “Men, they are stubborn; we must use the bayonet.” He reached the center of the line and cried, “I will lead you!” With a wild cheer, the Confederate battle-line surged forward.
